CHISEL AND HEART
2003 / video / 52 minutes
The Russian French sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) gained fame in The Netherlands with his 'Destroyed City' (1953). The work features the suffering of the bombarded city of Rotterdam.
There are not many sculptures which have stirred up emotions as the 'Destroyed City'.
Chisel and Heart shows Zadkines work in its full glory. His friends, former students, tell about their master.
The story of Zadkines covers a period during which the world was struck by two world wars. Zadkine's life was heavily affected by the wars.
This documentary is also a playful portrait of the relation between Zadkine and Holland: Zadkine wanted to earn a living, the Dutch found an artist who was modern and classic at the same time.
